walking, jogging and running

the trail is a pleasant route on foot for exercise away from road traffic, and is widely used as such every day.

Each year there is a 5 mile race from and to the theatre at the southern end of the trail, organised by Victory AC

This year's event was on 14th June, and included for the first time 2 additional juniors races - 1 mile and 2 miles.  results here

There is another annual local race - the Hayling 10 miles, which is one of the Hampshire Road Race League races in 2006.

cycling

the trail is a pleasant cycle route,  but sections of it are badly in need of maintenance - best on a mountain bike and prepare to get muddy!  The surface is currently tricky for racing cycles with narrow tyres, but in the summer it is normally in better repair and quite feasible on a touring bike.  Great Stop-Press news - it is to be resurfaced in March/April 2007! (see home page news)

See the route on the sustrans site.

Every year there a "round the harbours" cycle ride is organised by the British Heart Foundation and the Billy Trail is part of the route.  details here

There is also an annual Paris-to Hayling Charity Cycle ride, which has raised large sums of money for many charities. (some pictures here), which can use part of the track at the start or finish of the ride.

horse riding

there is a separate horse trail along part of the Billy trail, divided by a fence line.  A local stables backs right on to the trail - Westcroft (tel: 077 6690 6591).

windsurfing and kite-surfing

Windsurfing was invented on Hayling Island.  There is an annual round-the-island race. There is a designated area off the beach west of the Inn On The Beach. At high tide it is also possible at Stoke (Hayling Halt) and in Chichester Harbour between Hayling and Langstone (Launch at Northney or the Ship slipways)

Kite-surfing is best done from the beach west of the Inn On The Beach.
